As a senior advisor with a focus on China, Chris Johnson helps shape Eurasia Group's China expertise and offerings, drawing on his decades of experience in foreign affairs and security issues. Johnson, who is also the president and CEO of China Strategies Group, provides Eurasia Group clients with the insight and tools they need to understand and navigate China's economic, commercial, foreign, and security policies.
Johnson worked as a senior China analyst for the CIA for nearly two decades. In that role, his analysis was critical in shaping senior officials' understanding of and response to the decisions of the Jiang Zemin era, the transition to Hu Jintao in 2002, and the development of the new Chinese leadership under President Xi Jinping. In 2011, Johnson was awarded the US Department of State's Superior Honor Award for outstanding support to the secretary of state and her senior staff. He also served with distinction in providing daily intelligence support to President George W. Bush.
After leaving the CIA in 2012, Johnson served as the Freeman Chair in China Studies at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). He is currently a senior fellow on Chinese politics at the Asia Society Policy Institute's Center for China Analysis and a senior fellow in the office of the president at CSIS. Johnson is fluent in Mandarin Chinese and divides his time among New York City, China, and other parts of Asia. He graduated summa cum laude with bachelor's degrees in history and political science from the University of California, San Diego, and received his master's degree in security policy studies from George Washington University.
